My Negotiation Philosophy

While my ultimate strategy in negotiating any contract for my clients revolves around ensuring their interests are of paramount importance, the way I generally attempt to enter a negotiation does not revolve around the concept of winners and losers, or hard and soft negotiating. I do not look at what the parties will and won't do as much as I look at why they indicate what they will or won't do.

 

Why? Because getting to the why of something can oftentimes lead to a better deal than the parties ever contemplated, and can leave both parties with a feeling of mutual satisfaction, which then tends to lead to further business opportunities in the future. It is not a zero-sum, but a win-win that I look for when attempting to negotiate contracts that meet my clients' needs.

This type of negotiation is called "Principled Negotiation" and was developed at the Harvard Negotiation Project, now known as the Program On Negotiation. The idea is to seek mutual benefits whenever feasible, and if there are conflicting interests, prioritize fairness as the basis for the outcome rather than relying on negotiating power, if possible (or not in conflict with a client goal). This type of philosophy helps to find creative solutions for otherwise sticky situations.

My Negotiation Experience

I am a seasoned negotiation provider, helping both individuals and businesses to successfully resolve their disputes. With fourteen years of experience negotiating settlements between criminal clients and the attorneys representing the State of Illinois, and seven additional years resolving business matters for clients, I have the experience needed to help my clients achieve favorable outcomes without having to resort to expensive litigation.

 

In addition, while receiving my Master of Business Administration degree from Portland State University, I took an advanced negotiation class and participated in several mock negotiations. This education and experience gives me better insight when taking on negotiations for my clients. My mission is to assist my clients in achieving win-win solutions that leave all parties satisfied with the result. My vision is for every client transaction to be completed cost-effectively while protecting my clients' interests and meeting their goals through skilled mediation & dispute resolution.
